Clean your patio without a power washer using two common ingredients

A DIY expert has shared a simple eco-friendly technique for cleaning your patio using two common household ingredients — no pressure washer or harsh chemicals needed

You can transform your patio to look “spotless” using a simple technique with just two common household items. While it can be a challenging and time consuming job, getting your patio summer-ready doesn’t have to break the bank or harm the environment, according to DIY enthusiast Fix it with Fowler.

He maintains that his “eco-friendly” approach will produce “spotless” results without depending on “harsh chemicals” that might be dangerous for your pets or require a power washer.

In fact, his method uses two products you likely already have “under your kitchen sink”, reports the Express.

He demonstrated the technique in a clip shared on his YouTube channel.

The DIY guru explained: “Have you got a dirty patio like this? Well, today on Fix It With Fowler, I’m going to show you how to clean it without using any harmful chemicals, especially for the environment, and even for your pets. And the best thing is you don’t even need a jet wash.

“There are loads of different chemical-based cleaning products that you can use to clean your patio. And although these are really good at cleaning your patio, they can be quite bad for the environment, wildlife, and even your pets.

“And in most cases, you need to keep your pets away until the area is dry or, in some worst cases, for up to two days. And that just is not possible for us, so I’ve come up with a nice eco-friendly alternative that I’m going to try and clean the patio with.”

Step 1 – Remove any weeds

The expert noted that this method is not “damaging” to plants, meaning any weeds must be cleared before getting started. To tackle this, he used a trowel to scrape them away from the tiles.

Step 2 – Sweep and hose down the patio

Using a stiff brush, sweep the area thoroughly to get rid of any “loose debris”. Follow this up by wetting the surface with a “quick and convenient” garden hose.

Step 3 – Apply your ingredients

He said: “So the next stage is to apply some sodium carbonate, and I’ve got this soda crystals, which is sodium carbonate, readily available. And if you’re lucky, you might have some under your kitchen sink.”

The expert advised giving the patio a “light sprinkle” of the mixture, ensuring the entire surface is covered, before adding a “little bit of washing up liquid”.

Step 4 – Scrub the area

Using a stiff brush, scrub the patio thoroughly from one end of the tiles and work “your way around”. The expert described this as the “hardest part” of the process, advising extra attention be given to particularly “bad” patches.

Once complete, leave the solution to work its magic for 48 hours.

Step 5 – Rinse

After 48 hours, the specialist returned to the patio to find a striking difference already visible. He observed that rain had already washed away portions of the residue, though he would remove what remained using a hose before allowing it to dry out fully.
