Ireland weather: Heavy rain and thunderstorms this weekend as temperatures to drop to 2 degrees

Batten down the hatches, it looks like we are in store for a stormy weekend before milder conditions hopefully arrive next week – here is your updated Irish forecast

It looks like a weekend to stay indoors, as heavy showers and thunderstorms are on the way.

Temperatures will reach a high of 14 degrees before dropping down to 2 degrees overnight.

Early Met Éireann predictions for next week indicate that conditions will become milder due to southerly airflow.

Here is the forecast.

Today, Saturday, May 16th

Generally cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving eastwards across the country, clearing most areas in the afternoon. As the rain clears, sunny spells and scattered showers will follow. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees in light to moderate south to southwest winds, becoming westerly with the clearance of the rain.

Clear spells and well-scattered showers at first tonight, most frequent over Ulster. Cloud will increase overnight, and outbreaks of showery rain will develop in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees in light to moderate west to southwest winds.

Sunday, May 17th

Cloudy and breezy tomorrow with outbreaks of showery rain becoming widespread through the morning. The showers will turn heavy and persistent at times, particularly during the late afternoon and evening. Some thunderstorms are possible, too, with hail. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with a moderate to fresh southwesterly breeze developing.

The showers will ease early on in the night, becoming mainly dry with clear spells for most. A wetter night further south with cloudier conditions in the southwest where showers will give way to outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 7 degrees, coldest under clear spells in the north, in light southerly or variable winds.

Monday, May 18th

Rain and cloud will spread from the southwest on Monday morning, after a drier and brighter start further north. It will be rather dull and damp across the country through the day, with the heaviest falls expected across south Munster. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in moderate to fresh southerly winds.

It will stay mostly cloudy, with scattered showers, on Monday night. Milder than recent nights with temperatures not falling below 8 to 11 degrees, in a light to moderate southerly breeze.

Tuesday, May 19th

Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain clearing northeastwards through the morning, with some sunny spells and scattered showers following. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees in a light to moderate and occasionally fresh south to southwest breeze. Outbreaks of showery rain will continue through the night, clearing eastwards with drier and clearer weather developing towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southwesterly winds.

Wednesday, May 20th

Outbreaks of light and patchy rain and drizzle with some bright spells in between. Turning cloudier from the southwest during the evening. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in a moderate southwesterly wind.
