An urgent recall has been issued for 54 popular chicken products that are sold in major supermarkets across Ireland over fears they may be contaminated with Salmonella

Shoppers across Ireland are being urged to check their fridges and freezers after an urgent food safety alert was issued for dozens of popular chicken products sold in stores nationwide.
In total, 54 raw chicken items sold in Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, SuperValu, Centra, Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL have been recalled over fears they may be contaminated with Salmonella – a bacteria that can cause food poisoning and, in some cases, serious illness.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a spate of recall notices yesterday, warning that a number of affected batches could contain Salmonella.
While some of the products are now past their use-by dates, the FSAI warned they may still be in people’s homes, as many are suitable for freezing. Consumers are being advised to check both their fridges and freezers carefully.
Anyone who has purchased one of the affected products has been told not to eat it. All impacted batches are being removed from shelves, while recall notices are also being displayed in stores.
Customers can return any recalled product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund, with no receipt required.
Explaining the potential health risks linked to Salmonella, the FSAI said: “People infected with Salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between six and 72 hours.
“The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody. Other symptoms may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps.
“The illness usually lasts four to seven days. Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness,” reports the Irish Mirror.
