The president of Uttarakhand Mahila Congress Jyoti Rautela has said that the Champawat incident has raised serious questions on the State government, police and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. She said names of the BJP leaders are invariably linked with heinous crimes against women in the State.
Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan after her return from Champawat, Rautela asked many questions regarding the Champawat incident. She asked, “Where were the victim and her father for 48 hours? Why was the victim produced before a magistrate twice in two days? If the victim’s side orchestrated the conspiracy, did the police file an FIR against the victim’s father?”
She also asked that if the victim’s hands were tied at the time of her recovery, when were they untied and who was she with at the location where she was found?
Rautela added that the police should find out the truth behind the alleged letter circulating on social media, in which the victim’s family is talking about a settlement. The Mahila Congress president asked, “If the case was completely fabricated, how did the police reach such a hasty conclusion? Will the government take action against those who spread tension and anger in society over this incident? Will the entire matter be investigated by an independent agency to maintain public confidence? Will the police release a timeline of the entire incident?” She said that completing an investigation into such a sensitive incident within just 24 hours and then declaring it ‘fake’ raises many questions.
