An urgent recall has been issued for popular batches of chicken breast fillets sold at Lidl due to the presence of Salmonella.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) shared the recall information on its website to warn people of the dangerous bacteria.
Both the Free Range 100% Irish Chicken Breast Fillets (L1023753) and 100% Irish Diced Chicken Breast Fillets are being recalled. The 100% Irish fillets have a use-by date of April 12, while the diced fillets are dated for April 13. There is concern that shoppers might have frozen the chicken at home to be used at a later date.
A statement on the FSAI website reads: “The following batches of Lidl 100% Irish Chicken Breast Fillet products are being recalled due to the presence of Salmonella. Although the implicated batches are past their use-by date, the products are suitable for home freezing. Consumers are advised to check their freezers for the implicated batch.
“Recall notices will be displayed at the point of sale in Lidl stores.”
People infected with Salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between 6 and 72 hours. The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody. Other symptoms may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
Earlier today, more chicken was also recalled due to Salmonella.
