When and how was the scheme launched?
In February 2024, PM Modi announced a major gift to the countrymen. Under this scheme, the target is to install solar panels in 10 million homes by 2027.

Prime Minister Modi’s scheme has provided significant relief to millions of people from hefty electricity bills. With just a one-time investment, electricity can be used with a “Zero Electricity Bill” for over two decades.

Under this scheme, the government provides 300 units of free electricity to the public, while also providing a subsidy after installing solar panels.
Not only this, PM Modi’s government is providing a subsidy of ₹60,000-₹78,000 for installing 1-2 kilowatt solar panels for 0-150 units of electricity consumption, and ₹60,000-₹78,000 for installing 2-3 kilowatt panels for 150-300 units of electricity consumption.
How can I apply for the free electricity scheme?
Applying for the free electricity scheme is very easy. First, you need to visit the website and select the “Apply for Rooftop Solar” option on the homepage. Then, on the new page, select the state power distribution company and log in by entering your electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email address. After logging in, apply for an RTS panel by following the guidelines provided on a form and receive feasibility approval.
You can then install solar panels on your rooftop through a vendor registered with your DISCOM. After installation, you will need to apply for a net meter along with the plant details. Once the meter is installed, a commissioning certificate will be issued to enable the government to provide you with the subsidy.
