Dehradun police arrested 18 people during a late-night raid on a high-profile gambling racket in the Kotwali Nagar area under the state-wide Operation Prahar on Wednesday. Police recovered cash worth Rs 3.10 lakh, playing cards and dice from the spot.
Police said that the drive had started soon after the senior superintendent of police (SSP), Dehradun, Pramendra Dobal received an information that illegal gambling was being run on a large scale in a private apartment near Saharanpur Chowk. After receiving the information, a special police team was formed under the leadership of the circle officer (CO), Swapnil Muyal.
The police raided Mahavir Apartment late on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. During the raid, police found that gambling was being held in a flat on the third floor of the building. Eighteen people were caught red-handed while found gambling inside the flat.
Police recovered four decks of cards, 20 dice and Rs 3, 10,600 in cash from the accused. A case has been registered against all the arrested persons under sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Public Gambling Act at Kotwali Nagar police station.
During questioning, police found that the flat belonged to one of the arrested accused, Roshan Lal Bansal. He was allegedly allowing people to gamble in his flat and was himself taking part in the gambling activities.
The arrested accused are residents of different parts of Dehradun, including Rishinagar, Jhanda Bazar, Tilak Road, Brahmanwala, Nalapani, Chandan Nagar, Lakkhibagh, Niranjanpur, Karanpur and Kargi.
