Laura O’Connell’s Best Things in Life: Travel destination, guilty pleasure and dream dinner guest

Podcaster and comedy star Laura O’Connell is used to making us all laugh on her hit show Oh. Right. Yeah., but now the funnywoman talks RSVP through the things that put a smile on her face – including her favourite book, the delicious drink she is on the hunt for in Ireland and why every woman in her 40s is a legend.

Singer

It has to be David Bowie. Although I did recently have a dream about singing a Joni Mitchell song with my friend and singer/songwriter Evelyn Campbell. So maybe all three?

Book

Frankie by Graham Norton. I absolutely love him, he is a master when it comes to writing characters. This story was stunning.

TV Show

Summer Heights High with Chris Lilly. If you haven’t watched it yet, get into it.

Travel destination

South Africa. I love Cape Town, to be exact. Sun, culture, sea, food and beauty – what’s not to love?

Guilty Pleasure

I love Vinted.

Drink

I discovered the Mintu Cacao in Finland when I was there a few years ago. It is mint vodka and hot chocolate and it is bloody divine. I’m on the hunt for a non-alcoholic version now.

Dream Dinner Guest

Dawn French. She’s just a legend, isn’t she? I kind of feel like I’d forget she was Dawn French after a few minutes and I don’t think I’d be worried if I’d burned the potatoes. She is just sound.

Piece of Advice

Be sound to yourself. Next time you go in on yourself, imagine you’re saying those things to a child or a close friend. You’re not going to fix anything for anyone if you’re not sound to yourself first.

Childhood Memory

Myself and my twin sister had an imaginary friend we called Monchon, who we used to push around in our buggy. She was a glamorous old lady with purple hair. We’re not sure what ever happened to her, but she ceased to exist once the buggy got run over by a van. RIP Monchon!

Inspiration

Literally every woman in her 40’s. I can’t believe how many pressures society has heaved on us and we are all still trucking on. Despite the hormones, the expectations, the worries and the asks – we just get up, put on a mildly uncomfortable bra, pack some tampons and paracetamol in the handbag and face the day. Legends!
