Employees of Windlas Biotech Limited in Mohabbewala area of Dehradun staged a protest against the company management on Sunday over allegedly low salaries, long working hours and the compulsory three-month break system. Hundreds of workers gathered outside the factory gate from early morning and demanded that their salaries be increased to Rs 20,000 per month.
The protesting employees alleged that despite working overtime, they are being paid only between Rs 10,900 and Rs 13,800. Police reached the spot after receiving information about the protest and remained deployed outside the factory to maintain law and order.
According to the employees, workers started gathering outside the company gate at around 6 AM. As more workers joined the protest, a large crowd assembled at the factory premises. Police officials and factory management tried to convince the employees to end the protest, but the workers remained firm on their demands. The protest continued till late in the day while talks were held between company representatives and two members representing the employees.
The workers alleged that the company has not raised salaries for a long time, making it difficult for them to manage household expenses during rising inflation. Employees said that most workers in the factory are temporary staff, creating insecurity regarding their jobs. According to the protesters, around 3,500 employees are working in the factory in different categories with salaries ranging from Rs 10,900 to Rs 13,800 per month.
The employees also alleged that they are forced to work beyond fixed working hours without proper overtime payment. Another issue raised by the workers was the compulsory three month break reportedly given after one year of service. Employees claimed that during this break period, their income completely stops and later they have to submit documents again and go through a fresh recruitment process. The protesting workers said they would continue their agitation until their salary demand is fulfilled and the break system is removed.
