Washington – US forces have carried out fresh military strikes on southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and boats allegedly involved in laying mines, in a development that further escalates tensions despite ongoing fragile diplomatic efforts and a contested ceasefire framework.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operations were conducted under self-defence protocols, with officials stating that the strikes were aimed at neutralising immediate threats to American personnel and assets deployed in the region. The targeted locations reportedly included missile infrastructure along Iran’s southern coastline as well as naval assets operating near the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
Military sources indicated that the boats struck were suspected of laying mines in critical waterways, posing a potential risk to commercial shipping and naval movements. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor, has remained a key flashpoint throughout the ongoing tensions, with repeated incidents raising concerns over maritime security and global oil supply stability.
US officials described the action as limited and defensive in nature, insisting that the broader ceasefire framework remains intact and diplomatic engagement continues through indirect channels. However, the timing of the strikes has drawn renewed attention to the fragility of ongoing negotiations in the region.
Iran has not yet issued an official detailed response to the latest strikes, though previous similar incidents have consistently been met with strong condemnation from Tehran, which has accused Washington of undermining ceasefire understandings and escalating the conflict through unilateral military action.
Analysts warn that continued military operations alongside diplomatic talks could further complicate efforts to de-escalate tensions, potentially weakening trust between the two sides and prolonging instability in an already volatile region.
