Washington – US Senator Marco Rubio has described Cuba as a continuing security concern for the United States, drawing a sharp and strongly worded response from Havana, which has rejected the allegations and termed them baseless “lies.”
The remarks by Rubio, a long-time critic of the Cuban leadership, came amid already strained relations between the two countries. He reiterated his position that Cuba’s political structure and its regional engagements pose challenges to US interests and broader stability in the Western Hemisphere.
The Cuban government responded swiftly, rejecting the claims and accusing Rubio of deliberately spreading misinformation to advance political objectives. Officials in Havana said the statements were part of a recurring narrative aimed at justifying long-standing US sanctions and diplomatic pressure against Cuba.
Cuba’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement asserting that the country remains committed to peaceful international relations and non-interference policies. It further stated that such accusations only serve to deepen mistrust and further damage already fragile diplomatic ties between Washington and Havana.
Relations between the United States and Cuba have remained tense for decades, with periodic attempts at dialogue repeatedly undermined by disputes over sanctions, human rights concerns, migration issues and regional political influence.
Analysts note that Cuba continues to face significant economic challenges under US restrictions, while Washington maintains that its policy is linked to governance and human rights issues. The latest exchange highlights the continued lack of consensus on the future direction of bilateral relations.
Diplomatic engagement between the two countries remains limited, with no immediate indication of progress toward easing tensions following the latest war of words.
