The latest version of the Toyota Starlet received a zero-star rating for adult occupant protection in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsforAfrica test results. Child occupant protection earned three stars.
Toyota Starlet Scores Zero Stars rating
Manufactured in India, the Starlet is one of the most popular cars in South Africa. It comes with driver and passenger frontal airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard. However, it has no side head protection airbags.
During our transport and testing process, Toyota informed us that the Starlet was getting an update in South Africa. The new model will include additional safety features, such as side head and body airbags, as standard. This updated version is now available, and Global NCAP has anonymously purchased some for testing.
Global NCAP wants to give African consumers the chance to compare the safety performance of both versions of the car as soon as possible.
What crash report note?
The footwell area and bodyshell were found to be unstable and unable to withstand further loads. In the side impact test, both head and chest protection were rated as poor. Abdomen protection was rated as adequate.
The side pole test not conducts since side head protection airbags were not standard. In the frontal impact assessment, the head of the three-year-old dummy hit the vehicle’s interior, and chest protection was rated as low.
