Energy Minister AK Sharma wrote on X, “I have previously stated that consumers are Gods. The government has decided that all smart meters will now function like post-paid meters. The pre-paid system is being phased out. Under no circumstances will electricity be disconnected within a month. Consumers can pay their past dues in ten installments.”

Lucknow. Electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh have received significant relief. Following Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directive, the Energy Department has made a significant decision regarding 7.5 million smart meter holders. Their prepaid meters will now function like postpaid meters. State Energy Minister AK Sharma posted about this decision on social media X. Sharma wrote on X, “I had previously stated that consumers are Gods. The government has decided that all smart meters will now function like postpaid meters. In light of the technical difficulties faced by electricity consumers with smart/prepaid meters, an important decision has been taken today to provide significant relief to them. Accordingly, all consumers’ smart meters will now function like regular/postpaid meters. This means that the term prepaid is being abolished.

Electricity will not be disconnected.

The Energy Minister wrote that, as you previously paid your monthly bill, the bill for the period from the 1st to the 30th of the month will be sent to you via SMS or WhatsApp within the next ten days. Please pay within the given timeframe upon receiving the bill.” You are also requested to update your phone number and pay attention to messages from the electricity department. The department has also been re-directed that under no circumstances will electricity be disconnected within a month. It has also been stated that if there are outstanding dues, consumers should be given the option to pay them in ten installments.

The Energy Minister stated that the work of replacing old meters with smart prepaid meters has been postponed. However, resolving complaints related to the recently installed smart meters is a priority.
