Al-Ahli tighten grip on 3rd place in Saudi Pro League with victory at Al-Taawoun

DUBAI: Recently crowned AFC Champions League Elite heroes Al-Ahli defeated Al-Taawoun 2-1 on Monday to tighten their grip on third place in the Saudi Pro League with two games left to play.
The away victory put them on 75 points, four ahead of fourth-place Al-Qadsiah and 23 clear of Al-Taawoun in fifth.
Ivan Toney opened the scoring for Al-Ahli in the 17th minute with his 31st goal of the season, as he headed home a searching Matteo Dams pass from close range.
Angelo Fulgini equalized in the 55th minute with a well-placed shot to the left of goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Sanbi, but Al-Ahli retook the lead in the 79th minute when Brazilian defender Roger Ibanez headed an inswinging Riyad Mahrez corner into a gaping net, leaving keeper Mailson well-beaten.
Earlier Neom defeated Al-Shabab 2-1, with both of the home side’s goals coming from Said Benrahma penalties, in the 19th and 45th minutes. Yannick Carrasco scored Al-Shabab’s consolation in the 78th minute. The result leaves Neom in eight place on 44 points, and Al-Shabab in 13th place with 32.
