Sitara-i-Imtiaz Conferred Upon IoBM Founder President Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim

The conferment of the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz upon the Founder President of the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim, is a fitting tribute to a life devoted to public service, education, and nation-building.

A distinguished civil servant, visionary educationist, and compassionate community leader, Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim dedicated his life to the progress of Pakistan. Throughout a remarkable career spanning nearly four decades in the Civil Service of Pakistan, he served with integrity, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public welfare.

Having joined the Civil Service in 1957, he held several prominent positions, including Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Urban Affairs; Senior Member of the Federal Land Commission; and Chief Secretary Sindh. His leadership and administrative excellence earned him the respect of colleagues and citizens alike. Beyond government service, he remained deeply committed to social development, establishing educational institutions in underserved communities such as Mithi and Pasrur and contributing internationally as Director of Funds at UN-Habitat in Nairobi.

The Sitara-i-Imtiaz recognizes not only his distinguished service to the nation but also his lifelong belief that meaningful progress begins with education. Following his retirement in 1994, he embarked on a new mission: creating opportunities for future generations through quality higher education. Guided by the conviction that education empowers individuals and transforms societies, he established the Foundation for Higher Education, laying the groundwork for what would become one of Pakistan’s leading institutions of higher learning.

The Sitara-i-Imtiaz was presented by Governor Sindh, Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, to Mr. Talib Syed Karim on May 13, 2026, honouring a legacy that transcends institutions and generations. It serves as a national acknowledgment of a man whose life’s work was dedicated to empowering people, strengthening communities, and advancing Pakistan through service and education.

What set Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim apart was not merely his professional accomplishments but his vision for Pakistan’s future. He believed that educational institutions should cultivate critical thinking, ethical leadership, innovation, and public responsibility. His philosophy extended beyond classrooms and degrees; he saw education as a means of developing citizens capable of contributing meaningfully to society and strengthening the nation.

Today, the impact of his vision is reflected in IoBM’s community of over 18,000 graduates who have gone on to become accomplished professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders across Pakistan and around the world. Beyond their achievements, his enduring values of integrity, service, excellence, and perseverance continue to inspire generations to lead with purpose and contribute meaningfully to society.

As Pakistan reflects on the contributions of Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim, his legacy remains a powerful reminder that visionary leadership is measured not only by positions held, but by the lasting impact left on people and society. His words continue to embody that enduring commitment: “I have served Pakistan all my life and will make all efforts and sacrifices to see the Institute a reservoir of national strength and power.”
