The Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Hyderabad is witnessing an alarming rate of 5-6 accidents every day on average, prompting authorities to launch a comprehensive safety overhaul. With nearly 2.8 lakh vehicles plying on the expressway daily, traffic officials have emphasized that most of these crashes are preventable through better awareness and stricter enforcement measures.
Data collected over the last four months reveals that 33 percent of accidents are caused by drowsiness and sleep deprivation among drivers, making it the leading cause of crashes on the ORR. Reckless driving accounts for 25 percent of incidents, while overspeeding contributes to 15 percent of accidents. Tyre bursts are responsible for 14 percent of the crashes, highlighting the critical need for regular vehicle maintenance.
In response to the rising accident rate, authorities have announced a multi-pronged prevention plan aimed at bringing down accidents to zero. The new regulations prohibit stopping on the ORR except in case of genuine vehicle breakdowns, and drivers are required to immediately inform the designated call center if they need to halt. Safety alerts will be issued to all commuters at entry points to create awareness about safe driving practices on the high-speed corridor.
The enforcement strategy includes counselling sessions along with traffic challans for violators, marking a shift from purely punitive measures to educational intervention. Officials are also working on deploying faster emergency response teams and introducing traffic marshals wherever necessary to monitor and manage traffic flow. Enhanced CCTV coverage across the entire stretch of the ORR is being planned to improve surveillance and quick incident detection.
Vehicle fitness checks and mandatory tyre inspections are being introduced as preventive measures to address mechanical failures that lead to accidents. Authorities will conduct monthly ORR safety reviews to assess the effectiveness of implemented measures and make necessary adjustments to the safety protocol. The comprehensive approach aims to address both human error and technical failures that contribute to the high accident rate.
The zero-accident target set by officials represents an ambitious goal for one of Hyderabad’s busiest expressways. The authorities have stressed that achieving this target requires cooperation from all road users, including maintaining proper vehicle condition, avoiding drowsy driving, adhering to speed limits, and following all traffic regulations on the ORR.
