The recent fuel protests resulted in blockades at major fuel depots that caused widespread disruption across the country’s roads, including massive traffic build-ups
A new documentary will examine the fuel protests that brought traffic to a halt across the entire country.
Ireland on Empty will be presented by Virgin Media Southern News Correspondent Zara King, and the one-hour special will investigate the recent protests that unfolded over several days, bringing parts of Ireland to a standstill.
Set against a backdrop of rising fuel costs and mounting pressure on farmers and hauliers, protests spread rapidly from rural communities to key national infrastructure.
As prices surged, demonstrations escalated, culminating in blockades at major fuel depots that caused widespread disruption, such as at the Whitegate refinery in Cork. Ireland on Empty charts how an initial expression of economic strain quickly evolved into a national crisis.
The documentary explores the emotional and financial pressures driving those involved, as well as the broader impact on the public and on industries heavily dependent on fuel access. From Leinster House to Garda Headquarters, it examines the State’s response, including policing operations, the deployment of the Defence Forces, behind-the-scenes negotiations that became mired in confusion and controversy and the political fallout.
Independent TD for Kerry Danny Healy‑Rae offers a critical view of the Taoiseach’s handling of the unrest, stating: “Every time he opened his mouth, he threw petrol on the fire, and petrol and diesel were scarce at the time.”
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald reflects on public sentiment as the disruption intensified, noting: “I think everyone understood why the protests happened. No one wants their life disrupted, but people accepted that something had to give, something had to be done.”
Ireland on Empty will air on Wednesday, 13 May at 9 pm on Virgin Media One and Virgin Media PLAY.
