The Ireland weather forecast is looking positive from this weekend onwards as temperatures are expected to rise to possibly the mid-twenties after a cool start to May
Met Eireann has pinpointed the arrival of 20 degree heat – with temperatures to continue to rise next week.
The weather is expected to improve later this week after a generally dull and cool start to the month.
Today (Tuesday May 19) will see more widespread rainfall.
A Met Eireann forecaster says: “Widespread showers or more persistent spells of rain, some of which will be heavy with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms or hail. Generally cloudy with limited sunny spells.
“The showers will ease from the west through the evening. Highest temperatures of 12 to 17 degrees, warmest in the northeast, with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, stronger near southern and southwestern coasts.
“Mostly cloudy with scattered showers or more persistent spells of rain and drizzle [tonight]. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, with mostly light to moderate, occasionally fresh, southwesterly winds, veering westerly towards morning.”
Tomorrow (Wednesday May 20) will see sunshine return.
Met.ie says: “Plenty of dry weather with just a few light showers around at first. The best of the sunny spells will be over the northern half of the country as cloud gradually increases from the southwest through the day.
“Some rain and drizzle will follow into the southwest in the evening. Highest temperatures of around 13 to 18 degrees, with light to moderate, occasionally fresh, southwesterly breezes.
“Cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle clearing northeastwards through the night. Some hill and coastal mist and fog too.
“Mild with lowest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees, with mostly moderate, occasionally fresh, southerly winds.”
Thursday (May 21) will be a cloudy day with heavy rain hitting parts of the country:
“Cloudy with just some patchy outbreaks of light rain or drizzle at first. More persistant, and at times heavy, rain will develop, especially over the western half of the county.
“There will be some hill and coastal mist and fog too. Highest temperatures of 14 to 19 degrees, warmest in the east and north, with moderate to fresh southerly winds.
“Cloudy with some patchy outbreaks of rain or drizzle [on Thursday night], along with some hill and coastal mist and fog in the south. Another mild night, with lowest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees, with light to moderate southerly winds.”
Friday (May 22) will be another dull day with not a lot of sunshine.
The weather forecast says: “Continuing mostly cloudy with limited sunny spells and further patchy outbreaks of rain or drizzle. The best of the sunny spells are likely to be further east, with the heaviest of any rain further west.
“Highest temperatures of 14 to 20 degrees, warmest in north Leinster and Ulster, with moderate southerly winds.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, weather conditions will steadily improve.
Saturday (May 23) will be “a mostly dry day with good sunny spells developing and just the odd shower. Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, with light to moderate westerly or variable breezes.”
Providing a further outlook, Met Eireann says: “Generally dry, sunny and warm for Sunday, although some mist and fog may linger in coastal areas. Temperatures will continue to rise into next week, possibly reaching the mid-twenties at times, with some good sunshine, but also some showers or spells of rain.”
