A comprehensive training programme for medical officers in Uttarakhand concluded at the NELS Skill Centre, Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) on Monday, aimed at strengthening healthcare and emergency medical services during the Char Dham Yatra. The programme was jointly organised by the State’s Health department and the Medical Education department.
According to officials, the training programme was conducted from April 27 to May 18 in a phased manner. A total of 12 batches underwent intensive two-day training sessions, with approximately 200 medical officers from all districts of Uttarakhand participating.
The training focused on the management of medical, trauma and surgical emergencies commonly encountered during the Char Dham pilgrimage and in high-altitude areas. Important topics covered during the programme included high-altitude illnesses such as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), as well as breathlessness and respiratory emergencies, poisoning, cold injuries and hypothermia, and airway emergencies, they added.
Officials further informed that a major highlight of the programme was the hands-on skill training conducted on advanced mannequins and simulation models. Participants received practical training in several life-saving procedures, including endotracheal intubation, cricothyroidotomy, intraosseous cannulation and cardioversion, among others.
On the final day of the programme, the director of Medical Education Dr Ajay Arya. GDMC principal Dr Geeta Jain, GDMC Hospital medical superintendent Dr RS Bisht and the deputy medical superintendent Dr NS Bisht congratulated the faculty members, trainers, postgraduate students and support staff for successfully conducting the programme.
