IMD Heavy Rain Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a detailed weather bulletin for various parts of the country until May 19th. The deep depression currently forming in the Bay of Bengal and an active western disturbance are dividing the country’s weather into two extremes. While alerts for thunderstorms with winds of up to 70 km/h and heavy rainfall have been issued in states like Bihar and Jharkhand, many parts of northwest and central India are reeling under a severe heat wave.

Here’s a complete weather update for the next week.

According to the IMD’s afternoon bulletin dated May 13th, conditions are becoming favorable for the advance of the southwest monsoon into the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16th. However, pre-monsoon activities have indicated significant changes in the weather in several states.

Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern India: 70kmph Thunderstorm

The next few days will be extremely challenging for the states of Eastern India:

Jharkhand: On May 14th, strong winds of 50-60 km/h, with gusts reaching 70 km/h, will prevail. Rain will continue from May 15-18.

Bihar: A severe thunderstorm alert is issued in Bihar on May 16th, with winds reaching 70 km/h. Rain and lightning are also expected on May 13-15 and 17th.

West Bengal and Sikkim: A very heavy rain alert is issued for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal today. Heavy rain will continue between May 14-16.

Northeast India: Threat of torrential rain and flooding

No relief expected in the Northeastern states until May 19th:

Assam and Meghalaya: Very heavy rain is expected here today and tomorrow. Continuous heavy rain will continue between May 15th and 19th.

Arunachal Pradesh: Very heavy rain is expected here on May 14th and 18th.

Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura: A heavy rain alert has been issued for these states until May 15th.

Northwest and Central India: Tortured by a Severe Heat Wave

While it is raining in the east, West and North India are sweltering under intense heat:

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh: A severe heat wave will occur in western Rajasthan and western Madhya Pradesh between May 13th and 15th. The heat wave will continue in Rajasthan until May 19th.

Uttar Pradesh: A heat wave warning has been issued in Uttar Pradesh between May 16th and 19th.

Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana: Heatwave conditions will prevail here between May 17th and 19th. Meanwhile, light rain and dust storm may occur today and tomorrow (May 13-14).

South India: Heavy Rain in Kerala and Karnataka

Kerala and Mahe: Heavy rain is expected here from May 13th to 16th.

Karnataka: A hailstorm and heavy rain alert has been issued for South Interior Karnataka on May 15th. Coastal and North Interior Karnataka may experience storms with winds of up to 70 km/h on May 14th and 15th.

Temperatures to Rise by 6 Degrees

The IMD has forecast that maximum temperatures in Northwest India will see a gradual increase of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius over the next 5-6 days. The mercury may also rise by 2 to 4 degrees in Central and Eastern India, further increasing the humid heat.

Fishermen Warning

Due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, winds of up to 60 km/h will blow in the Andaman Sea and adjoining areas until May 18th. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these areas. A fresh western disturbance will affect northwest India on May 15th, likely bringing snowfall in the mountains and another round of dust storms in the plains.
