IMD Heavy Rain Alert: In its latest bulletin issued on May 16, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared important weather information for all parts of the country. While the southwest monsoon (Monsoon 2026) has arrived prematurely in many parts of the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, an alert for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall has been issued for several states in northern and eastern India. Winds of up to 70 kmph are expected to wreak havoc in the coming days. Here’s the full weather forecast for May 22:

According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon has entered the southeastern Arabian Sea, parts of the Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the entire Nicobar Islands today, May 16. The northern limit of the monsoon is now passing through parts of the Andaman Islands, including Sri Vijayapuram (Port Blair).

Major Thunderstorm Alert

Severe thunderstorms are expected in several states over the next few days:

Bihar and Jharkhand: Thunderstorms with winds of 50-60 kmph are expected today (May 16), with maximum gusts of up to 70 kmph. Jharkhand may experience similar conditions on May 19 and 20.

Andhra Pradesh (Rayalaseema): A storm alert with winds of up to 70 kmph is issued on May 19 and 20.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Heavy rainfall with sustained winds of up to 70 kmph is expected from May 16 to 18.

Heavy Rain Forecast (May 16-22)

East and Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya will experience heavy rainfall from May 16 to 18 and again on May 21-22. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also on a heavy rain alert for May 21-22.

South India: Heavy rain will continue in Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, and interior Karnataka until May 19.

Hailstorm warning: Hailstorms are also expected in some parts of south interior Karnataka today (May 16).

Heat wave wreaks havoc in North India

Temperatures will rise sharply in the plains of North India amid the rains:

Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan: Severe heat waves will prevail here between May 19 and 22.

Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana: Heat waves are forecast in these states between May 18 and 22.

Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha: Temperatures will remain high and heat waves will persist until May 22.

4. Monsoon Update: When in Kerala?

The IMD has confirmed that the monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on May 26. Conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance into further parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal over the next 3-4 days.

Warning for Fishermen

Gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph are blowing along the Kerala coast, the Lakshadweep region, and the Gulf of Mannar. Wind speeds may reach 65 kmph near the Somalia coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to the adverse weather.
