Gold mine collapse in Badakhshan kills five, injures eight

BADAKHSHAN (Amu tv): A gold mine collapse in northeastern Afghanistan has killed five people, including two children, and injured eight others, the Taliban’s defense ministry said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Shahr-e-Buzurg district of Badakhshan province after a landslide caused the mine to cave in, trapping a number of workers under debris, according to the ministry.

The ministry said the wounded were taken to hospital for treatment and that some workers trapped under the rubble were rescued.

Accidents of this kind are relatively common in Afghanistan, particularly in remote mining areas where extraction is often carried out using rudimentary methods and without proper safety standards or machinery.

Badakhshan is one of Afghanistan’s mineral-rich provinces and has seen a significant increase in gold extraction in recent years. Much of the mining activity is conducted by small-scale or private operators, often with limited oversight and technical capacity.

Experts say the lack of standardized mining practices, safety equipment and regulation has contributed to repeated deadly incidents across the sector.
