Based on detailed astronomical calculations related to the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon, Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has predicted that Eid-ul-Adha 2026 Pakistan is likely to be observed on Wednesday, May 27.
SUPARCO has said the new moon of Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH is expected to be born on May 17, 2026, at about 1:01 AM Pakistan time. Astronomical predictions indicate that the crescent moon could be observable later the same evening in a number of parts of Pakistan under very favourable viewing conditions.
If the moon is sighted on May 17, then Eid al-Adha is likely to fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. The first day of Dhul-Hijjah is likely to fall on Monday, May 18.
The prediction has already created major public interest as families, businesses, transport sectors and livestock markets across Pakistan prepare for one of the most important Islamic festivals of the year.
Favourable moon sighting conditions increase the chances of early confirmation
SUPARCO officials said astronomical conditions for moon sighting on the evening of May 17 are looking very promising. Experts estimate the age of the moon at sunset to be more than 18 hours, and the moon will be visible for close to 60 minutes after sunset.
These conditions, astronomers believe, will increase the chances of successful moon sighting observations across different parts of Pakistan. The clear visibility duration and favourable crescent elevation over the horizon are perceived as important scientific indicators in support of crescent observation.
Astronomical calculations before major Islamic occasions have gained importance in Pakistan in terms of administrative planning, travel arrangements and public awareness. Scientific institutions today often provide predictions to supplement the traditional procedures of moon observation, while respecting the final authority of religious committees.
SUPARCO’s forecasts are also assisting the public and private sectors to start logistical arrangements, keeping in view the expected Eid holidays and increased travelling movement across the country.
Final Eid-ul-Adha date subject to Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmation
Although the astronomical prediction is promising, the official final announcement of Eid-ul-Adha 2026 will be announced by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after traditional moon sighting observations.
The committee usually includes religious scholars, meteorological experts and regional representatives from all over Pakistan to scrutinise crescent sighting reports before announcing the official beginning of Islamic months.
While calculations based on astronomy suggest May 27 as the likely date for Eid, authorities have said the official confirmation would still depend on the testimony of a verified moon sighting.
Pakistan’s combination of scientific forecasting and religious observation continues to demonstrate the country’s balanced approach to maintaining Islamic traditions while adopting modern technological support systems.
This increasing cooperation between religious authorities and science is viewed by many as being helpful in improving the efficiency of planning and in providing public clarity on important Islamic occasions.
Arafat Day is expected on May 26, before Eid celebrations begin
Arafat Day is currently expected to be on Tuesday, May 26, 2026; it is a day of great spiritual significance for Muslims and the most important part of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah.
During Hajj, pilgrims assemble in the plains of Arafat to pray and offer supplication. This event is regarded as the spiritual climax of the pilgrimage experience. Islamic scholars usually call Arafat Day one of the more religiously rewarding and sacred days in the Islamic calendar.
For Muslims not performing Hajj, fasting on Arafat Day is regarded as highly meritorious and spiritually rewarding. Many people across Pakistan traditionally spend the day in prayers, Quran recitation, fasting and charitable acts before the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
Mosques and religious institutions across the country are also expected to organise special programs and sermons related to the importance of Dhul Hijjah, Hajj and Arafat Day during the last days before Eid.
Expected Eid holidays may support travel and family gatherings
Eid-ul-Adha festivities in Pakistan are expected to span from May 27 to May 29, 2026, if current predictions come true. The formal notification of the public holiday has not yet been formally released, but extended holidays are widely expected.
The Eid period is traditionally a time of increased travel activity as millions of Pakistanis visit relatives, hometowns and family gatherings during the multi-day break. Transport services, airlines, bus operators and rail systems are expected to gear up for significantly higher passenger demand over the holiday period.
In the weeks leading up to Eid, there is expected to be increased commercial activity in the retail markets, shopping centres and livestock bazaars in cities like Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Peshawar.
The Eid-ul-Adha preparations usually witness a lot of economic activity in the businesses connected with trading and transportation of livestock, clothing, food and household items, which is a boost to the local markets and seasonal trade.
Eid al-Adha remains deeply significant across Pakistan.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is a celebration of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) obedience and dedication to God, who was willing to sacrifice his son in submission to Allah until divine compassion intervened and substituted the sacrifice with a ram.
The occasion remains of deep spiritual, cultural and social significance across Pakistan. Muslims who can afford it perform Qurbani, the ritual sacrifice of animals such as goats, sheep, cows or camels, with the meat distributed among family members, relatives and those in need.
Special prayers are held in mosques and open grounds across the country. Families come together for meals, celebrations and acts of charity. The spirit of generosity and community sharing remains one of the major themes associated with Eid al-Adha in Pakistan.
The festival also strengthens social unity and compassion, especially through the distribution of meat for charity and support to underprivileged households during the period of celebration.
Pakistan’s scientific institutions are playing a larger role in Islamic calendar forecasting
The expanding technological capabilities of Pakistan and growing emphasis on scientific integration in administrative planning are reflected in the increasing role of SUPARCO and other scientific institutions in forecasting the Islamic calendar.
Forecasting astronomical events is particularly useful today to government agencies, educational institutions, travel operators and businesses that need to plan for major Islamic events and public holidays.
Pakistan’s growing use of scientific calculations to determine the Islamic calendar, alongside traditional methods of moon sighting, is a case of how modern technology can enhance, rather than replace, age-old religious customs, say experts.
Accurate forecasting of Islamic occasions is also helping to enhance operational efficiency in sectors such as aviation, education, commerce and tourism.
Public preparations for Eid al-Adha are expected to intensify in the coming weeks
With the advent of Eid al-Adha, a rush is expected to be created in Pakistan. Major urban centres are likely to see bustling livestock markets, and shopping districts may see increasing consumer activity related to Eid clothing, gifts and household purchases.
Traffic management, sanitation and public safety plans will also be introduced in cattle markets and busy commercial areas to ensure smooth movement during the Eid season.
All religious institutions across Pakistan are expected to organise sermons and awareness campaigns on the spiritual significance of sacrifice, charity and responsible Qurbani practices.
As Pakistan gears up for family reunions, religious rituals and one of the nation’s biggest annual Islamic celebrations, communities across the country are responding positively to the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha 2026 schedule.
