The well-deserved cheque is the biggest cash prize ever won on Irish radio, and the family are already planning their first move, which will be a lovely holiday to Disneyland
A Cork family who scooped a well-deserved record-breaking cash prize on the ‘Cash Machine’ radio competition are planning a big trip to Disneyland.
Keith ‘KC’ Cunningham, who presents RedFM’s ‘Breakfast with KC’ show, welcomed the family to the studio to hand over the biggest cash prize ever won on Irish radio – a whopping €305,000.
In emotional scenes, winner Donal O’Riordan and his family took the winning cheque in total disbelief.
Donal said it was “such a special moment” for him, his wife Susan and son Zack, who has special needs. They already have a plan in motion as the family is set for a fabulous holiday to Disneyland.
Donal went on to tell KC what the winnings meant to the family, “We are totally made up. It is just not sinking in. Is it real? Is it actually happening?”
KC jokingly asked Donal, “How many cousins or relatives that you didn’t know you had have you heard from?” as the family laughed and said they will have to “block” a few. The Cash Machine competition is one of the biggest radio competitions in Ireland, with a weekly prize up for grabs for listeners across the GoLoud network of stations, reports Cork Beo.
It is played across the country and is known for awarding large cash prizes. Winners need to be quick to pick up the phone when called, and know the exact winning figure to scoop the sum. When Donal got the call on Friday, he said, “I can’t believe it, it’s going to change my life completely, like. I can’t thank you enough. You’re my favourite radio show.”
Radio host Ciara Revin was thoroughly touched by the exchange, saying afterwards, “When I hear this, you really do appreciate what a difference it can make to people’s lives. I’m actually welling up.”
