Medical professionals have informed Beverley Callard that her radiotherapy treatment ought to have commenced earlier. The 69 year old star disclosed her early-stage breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year and has been regularly updating supporters on her journey.
The Coronation Street icon, who portrayed Liz McDonald on the ITV programme intermittently for three decades, recently made the move to Ireland alongside husband Jon McEwan to take on a role in RTE’s Fair City, and turned to social media to share details of her consultation with her new medical team.
In a fresh video uploaded to Instagram on Tuesday evening, she explained: “Well I went to the hospital today at quarter past three, and they all seemed very nice, obviously they’re new to me.
“They are a little concerned because they think I should’ve started the radiotherapy before now but of course because we moved house, it took a while for my medical records to come from England to Ireland et cetera but they’ve all arrived 1779865096.”
The former I’m A Celebrity…South Africa participant went on to reveal she has a follow-up consultation scheduled for later in the week, with treatment set to commence in the coming days, reports the Mirror.
She continued: “I’ve got to go back on Thursday morning to see some more doctors and medical people and then they will begin it soon so it went okay, it went okay. So I will keep you updated.”
The actress, who rose to fame in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps alongside Sheridan Smith and Will Mellor, shared an update with her followers: “A trip to the breast clinic today… it went ok, not quite what I wanted to hear but a step forward nonetheless Hoping to get started as soon as possible!”
Following the Bank Holiday weekend, Beverley expressed gratitude to supporters and admitted she was feeling “nervous” ahead of beginning her treatment.
She explained: “I go see my new surgeon on Tuesday so she can see what my previous surgeon has done because obviously I’ve moved to Ireland, and then on Thursday, I’ve got my first appointment with the oncologist so I’ll be starting radiotherapy very soon. I’m all ready for it and I’m full of beans and really going for it.
“Obviously, I’m a bit nervous. You’ve been great, you’ve sent me zillions of messages. For every single person, it’s unique and different so we will just see what happens. Thanks for all your messages – even people telling me what shampoo and conditioner to use, I really appreciate it.”
Beverley initially disclosed her diagnosis back in February while appearing on RTE’s Late Late Show, revealing that she’d learnt of the news mere moments before stepping onto set for her latest soap role. She revealed: “I’ve had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally, 15, 20 minutes before I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous and thinking, ‘I hope everybody thinks I’m all right’, whatever.
“And my consultant rang me and said, ‘you’ve got to come back to the UK’ I said, ‘Well, I can’t possibly, I’ve just taken a new job’. I said ‘I’m away for a month’, and I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“But I’m fine, I’m absolutely fine. My head was a bit mashed for the first few days. It’s very early stages, and I’m along with thousands of other women as well.”
