Microsoft has officially confirmed the launch of Azure Linux 4.0. At the Open Source Summit, held in North America, Brendan Burns, co-founder of Kubernetes and today Microsoft’s Corporate VP of Azure Cloud Native, talked about the evolution from open-source to agentic AI. The exciting arrival of Microsoft’s open source Linux distribution was announced. It is a supported version of Linux supported by Microsoft available on Azure. It is available for everyone.

Microsoft also confirmed that developers will soon be able to run it locally through Windows Subsystem for Linux on Windows 11.

Microsoft has released Linux-based programs before. The first was the Azure Sphere edge computing device. This was followed by CBL-Marnier, a Linux-based container software platform, which was later renamed Azure Linux. Never, however, had Microsoft released a general-purpose Linux distro until now.

So why did the news catch us all by surprise? It was because the news was originally meant to be announced at Microsoft Techcon in two weeks. But, at the last minute, they decided to let the news out now.

For years, Microsoft quietly used Linux behind the scenes for cloud services, AI infrastructure, and container systems. But now the company is openly shipping its own Linux operating system for customers, developers, and enterprise workloads on Microsoft Azure.

A bigger industrial message through the Announcement 

For decades, Microsoft and Linux have been seen as rivals. Back in the early 2000s, former Microsoft CEO Steven Ballmer famously called Linux “a cancer.” But now in 2026, Microsoft is running most Azure cloud workloads on Linux. And most importantly shi, shipping its own Linux distribution is a very major shift in the open source ecosystem. Microsoft is no longer simply “supporting” Linux. It is building a business strategy around it.

The AI Boom is Pushing Microsoft Toward Linux 

The biggest reason is that e-scale models and cloud inference systems run primarily on Linux infrastructure. According to Microsoft, this Linux platform is optimized for AL clusters, Kubernetes deployments, Cloud-Native Applications, and better hardware integration. Microsoft also admitted that services provided on OpenAI and ChatGPT heavily depend upon the Foundation alone, and Microsoft wants deeper control over the entire stack.

Microsoft says stats show that more than two-thirds of Azure customers’ cores now run Linux. Thbernetes, originally co-created by BrBrendanurns, is now dominating cloud-native infrastructure. Most of the AI systems are Linux-based t, serving billions of queries daily. Most of the AI enterprise workload is deployed on Linux servers

Azure Linux 4.0 may look like just another enterprise Linux distribution, but strategically it represents something much bigger. The release of Azure Linux Version 4.0 illustrates that the priorities associated with cloud computing are transforming quickly in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

Instead of competing against Linux, Microsoft has decided to become part of the Linux ecosystem itself. And honestly, that might be one of the biggest transformations in tech history.
