Vande Bharat Express: Traveling from Delhi to the valleys of Kashmir has now become not only pleasant but also very economical for your pocket. The launch of the Vande Bharat Express on the Jammu-Srinagar route has brought a huge influx of passengers. People are increasingly opting for trains, avoiding expensive airfares and tiring road travel, leaving airlines and local taxi and bus operators in a fix.
How can you travel from Delhi to Srinagar for just ₹1948?
If you’re planning a trip from New Delhi to Jammu, the “New Delhi-Jammu Tawi Vande Bharat Express (22477)” could be a great option. You can book this train ticket through the IRCTC website or app. The fare, including food, is ₹1525. If you opt out of the food option while booking the ticket, you will save ₹307 and the journey from New Delhi to Jammu will cost just ₹1,218.
Additionally, the fare for the new Vande Bharat train from Jammu to Srinagar is approximately ₹730. This means your total travel time from Delhi to Srinagar will be just ₹1,948. While it may take a little longer than a flight, it’s a much cheaper and more comfortable deal compared to airfares of ₹4,000 to ₹6,000.
Why is Vande Bharat surpassing flights and road transport?
The biggest reason for passengers opting for the train is its affordable fares and safe travel in a short time. “It’s cheaper than flights and much safer and more comfortable than navigating long, dangerous mountain roads,” said Mohammad Afzal Malik, a passenger at Srinagar railway station.
According to railway data, on the train’s inaugural day on May 2nd, approximately 3,925 passengers travelled. On the second day (May 3rd), this figure exceeded 5,000. The convenience of reaching Srinagar from Jammu in less than five hours makes it a popular choice.
Why are taxi and bus operators’ heartbeats soaring?
This massive shift in passenger numbers is directly impacting local transporters. Sheikh Mohammad Yusuf, general secretary of the All Jammu and Kashmir Transport Welfare Association, says that approximately 70,000 cabs operate in the Union Territory. If this trend continues, the livelihoods of cab and bus drivers will be severely affected.
Expressing his concern, Yusuf said, “We are not against rail transport and welcome the premium Vande Bharat Express, but the government must formulate a policy to protect the interests of the thousands of cab and other drivers who depend entirely on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.”
Will this craze for train travel continue?
For a long time, airlines have dominated this route during peak season, but a faster and cheaper rail service has changed that dynamic. However, industry experts believe that the current rush could also be a result of initial enthusiasm and high airfares.
According to a transporter, “The future trend will depend on how well the train maintains its punctuality, ticket availability, and service quality as demand increases.” Nevertheless, initial trends have made it clear that Vande Bharat is not just an alternative to flights, but is completely transforming the economics of transportation on this region’s most important route.
