Iran claims striking US warship in Strait of Hormuz; CENTCOM denies report

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has dismissed claims made by Iranian media regarding a missile strike on an American naval vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian state-affiliated Fars News Agency reported on Monday that two missiles struck a US frigate near Jask. According to the report, the vessel was hit after it allegedly ignored warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and violated transit security protocols.

CENTCOM rubbished the claims in a statement on X, saying no United States (US) Navy ships had been struck.

“US forces are supporting Project Freedom and enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports,” the command said as an American official speaking to Al Jazeera also clarified that the report of the strike was false.

The escalation follows President Donald Trump’s announcement on Truth Social regarding “Project Freedom”.

Under said plan, the US intends to “guide” ships out of the Strait of Hormuz and Trump has warned that Iranian attempts to block maritime traffic “will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully”.

In response, Iranian officials have asserted their authority over the waterway. Maj Gen Pilot Ali Abdollahi told a Tehran-based state broadcaster that any foreign military force attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz without coordination would be targeted.

He specifically identified the US military as a primary target in this context.
