“I like that she’s taken a liking to golf, and she likes to go out on the course with me, and if that blossoms into something bigger, then that would be amazing”
Rory McIlroy has shared a sweet comment about his daughter, Poppy, and how he would feel if she followed in his golfing footsteps.
Speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards, where he won the World Comeback of the Year award, Rory said that the five-year-old is already joining him on the golf course.
When asked if he thought Poppy would have a future with the Ladies Professional Golf Association, he said, “I would say that is up to her. If that’s what she wants to do, I would be 100 percent behind her and support her. But if that’s not what she wants to do, I am happy to support her in whatever she wants.
“But I like that she’s taken a liking to golf and she likes to go out on the course with me and if that blossoms into something bigger, then that would be amazing. But if it doesn’t she’s always going to have golf in her life in some way and that’s great as well.”
The Champion golfer shares Poppy with his wife, Erica. The couple met in 2015 and got engaged that December. They then tied the knot in April 2017 at Ashford Castle in County Mayo, and welcomed Poppy three years later in September 2020.
Rory previously said sharing his joy of golfing with Poppy has been amazing. He said he is also glad she has been given the opportunity to travel the world and see places he wasn’t able to see when he was young.
“To see her grow up, to have her travel the world to see different places, to give her a life that I could only dream about when I was that age, that’s been the coolest thing,” he said at a press conference shortly before The Masters Champions Dinner, Golf Week Mag reported.
