Today’s Weather, May 19: Two very unique and contrasting weather patterns are being witnessed across the country. While people in North and Central India are suffering from the fiery rain and scorching heat, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and torrential rain have begun to wreak havoc in more than 20 states in Southeast and Northeast India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain alert for many parts of the country in its morning bulletin for today, May 19.
The silver lining is that the monsoon has fully covered the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and there is a strong possibility of it reaching the coast of Kerala by May 26. According to the Meteorological Department’s latest bulletin, several cyclonic circulations and troughs are currently active in various parts of the country. This has led to dust storms and heavy rains, while the sun’s torment is at its peak in the plains of North India.
Thunderstorm alert of 60kmph in Bihar and Bengal
The most dangerous situation is expected in eastern India today. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert stating:
Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal: These two states are expected to experience severe thunderstorms with winds of 50 to 60 kmph and gusts up to 70 kmph today. There is also a risk of lightning.
Heavy Rain Alert in These Areas
Due to the increasing monsoon, heavy rain will fall in many states today. The IMD has issued a heavy rain alert in the following areas:
Eastern and Northeastern India: Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Southern India and Islands: Kerala, Mahe, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Storms with winds of 40-50 kmph are expected in these 20 states.
Severe thunderstorms and lightning are expected in more than 20 states today. Winds of 40 to 50 kmph are expected in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, entire Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan and Goa, Central Maharashtra, Odisha, and Telangana. Winds of 30-40 kmph are expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
Heatwave Tortures Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh
Amidst the storm and rain, today will be a furnace-like day for the people of North and Central India:
Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh: Severe heatwaves will prevail in many parts of these two states today. Nights in Western Uttar Pradesh will also be extremely hot, making it difficult for them to relax for 24 hours.
Heat wave conditions will also prevail in: Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar (parts), Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Telangana. Nights will also be hot in Rajasthan today.
What is the update on the monsoon?
The southwest monsoon is progressing at its expected pace. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) has currently reached 17.5°N/98°E, extending from 6°N/70°E. According to the Meteorological Department, it will cover the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal in the next 3-4 days, after which it will reach Kerala on May 26 (± 4 days).
Restrictions on Exploration to the Sea
Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal: Gale-force winds of 40 to 50 kmph (gusting to 60 kmph) are blowing along the Kerala-Karnataka coast, Lakshadweep Islands, and the Andaman Sea. Wind speeds may reach up to 65 kmph near the Somalia coast. Fishermen have been strictly advised to stay away from the sea for the time being.
