Indian fashion critics ‘obsessed’ with Sanam Saeed’s peacock-inspired Cannes debut

Pakistani actor Sanam Saeed made her red carpet debut at the Cannes Film Festival in a custom Hussain Rehar ensemble, sparking widespread praise and a cross-border debate on social media.

The outfit drew inspiration from a white peacock, merging an anarkali, a cape, and a couture gown. According to the designer’s official brand account, the ensemble featured mukesh, zardozi, and mirror work, requiring over 2,300 hours of labor by 50 artisans.

Saeed paired the outfit with silver and diamond jewelry, including peacock-feather-inspired ear cuffs and a pasa-style maang tikka, finishing the look with flowers braided into a sleek braid.

The appearance attracted immediate attention from Indian fashion commentators. Indian wardrobe consultant and stylist Nisha Goenka praised the structure of the outfit on social media, stating that most Cannes looks “either become too safe or overly theatrical,” while this specific look sat “somewhere in between”.

Sufi Motiwala described the silhouette on Saeed as “ravishing,” “unpredictable,” and “effortlessly chic,” rating the overall look “10 out of 10”.

As images of the debut circulated on X and Instagram, Indian social media users began praising Saeed while criticizing the appearances of Indian celebrities at the festival, including Alia Bhatt, Huma Qureshi, Urvashi Rautela, and Isha Ambani.

Multiple users from India left comments under her photos, with one stating, “This belongs in the hall of fame.” Another comment compared the Pakistani designer to Bollywood filmmakers, reading, “Hussain Rehar is what Karan Johar thinks he is”.

The viral reception led to a debate regarding identity and cultural representation. Some Indian accounts labeled Saeed’s appearance “South Asian representation,” leading Pakistani users to question the erasure of her national identity.

One Pakistani user responded to the regional framing by writing, “South Asian representation… what are we? A joint family”. Other Pakistani commentators noted that despite dozens of Indian influencers and Bollywood actors attending the festival, users across the border sought validation through a Pakistani star.

In an Instagram post, the actor defined her perspective on the appearance.

“A South Asian woman representing Pakistan and our heritage and craft,” Saeed wrote.

She added that she walked the red carpet “for the women of Pakistan, for the ones who came before us, for the ones who are yet to come and for the ones who are never seen behind the scenes”.
