Met Eireann pinpoints arrival of warmer weather and longer dry spells in U-turn

There has been cooler temperatures and scattered rainfall across the country over the past few days, but it looks like we’ll get a glimpse of summer late next week

Met Eireann pinpoints when the weather will become warmer with “longer dry spells” on the horizon.

But before that, there will be more unsettled conditions.

Today (Thursday May 14th) will see a mix of sunny spells and heavy rain showers.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “This morning will be cloudy with scattered showers for most, some turning heavy. More persistent rain will develop in the west and south.

“Drier weather with sunny spells will extend from the north through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in moderate to fresh northerly winds.

“Tonight will be dry for most with long clear spells and just isolated showers. Chilly with lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly winds.”

Tomorrow (Friday May 15th) will be another mixed bag on the weather front.

Met.ie says: “Friday will bring a mix of sunny spells and well scattered showers. Cloud will thicken in the west and southwest later in the afternoon and evening with some light rain and drizzle possible. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees in a light to moderate northwest breeze.

“Cloud will build from the west overnight, bringing a few patches of rain and drizzle. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 in a light west to southwest breeze.”

Providing a national outlook for the coming days, forecasters say it will remain “unsettled this weekend and early next week with rain or showers each day. Remaining cool for the time of year.”

There is more rain forecast for the weekend.

Saturday (May 16th) will see “more persistent rain will push into the west and southwest early on Saturday, gradually spreading eastwards across the country through the day.

“A clearance to sunny spells and isolated showers will move into western areas by evening. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in light to moderate west to southwest winds.

“Rain in the east will clear into the Irish Sea early on Saturday night, with clear spells and scattered showers following from the west. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees in a light westerly breeze.”

It will be “largely dry at first” on Sunday (May 17th) “with sunny spells and just the odd shower”.

Met.ie says: “It will become cloudier in the afternoon with more widespread showers spreading from the west, some turning heavy with the chance of isolated thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.”

Monday (May 18th) will be “a dull day with patchy rain and drizzle at first. More persistent rain will spread from the southwest through the day. Becoming breezy as the rain spreads with light southerly winds increasing moderate to fresh. Milder with highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees.”

In some good news for next week, Met Eireann forecasters say it will become “warmer from Tuesday (May 19th) onwards but continuing unsettled for a time with further rain and showers. There is potential for longer dry spells towards the end of the working week.”
