A serious incident occurred today when a man died after a shark attack off Western Australia’s coast on Saturday, police confirmed.

The police said in a statement that the 38-year-old victim was bitten at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, about 31km west of Perth in the morning.

Given the severity of the situation, state authorities urged the public to increase vigilance in the water around the island. It is pertinent to note that this marks the second fatal attack in Australia this year.

Meanwhile, drone footage from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation shows that a police boat, officers, and a rescue helicopter were available at the scene.

According to Reuters, a shark bit a boy in Sydney Harbour this past January as well. The recent incident reportedly added to a recent series of shark attacks along Australia’s eastern coast.

It has been observed that most shark attacks occur along the east and southeast seaboard of Australia. Additionally, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare noted that nearly 20 such incidents occur each year.

Rottnest Island is a prominent and popular destination located about 19 kilometres off Perth in Western Australia, known for its beaches and aquatic activities.
