UFC president Dana White has revealed an unexpected logistical problem threatening the promotion’s historic White House event after discovering that the South Lawn could attract some very unwelcome guests, with insects reportedly swarming around the outdoor lighting setup planned for the card. The unprecedented event, officially titled UFC Freedom 250, is scheduled to take place on June 14, 2026, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington D.C. and is expected to become the first sporting event ever staged at the White House. The card is being organised as part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, while the date also coincides with Flag Day and the 80th birthday of US president Donald Trump. Although the event was originally linked to July 4 celebrations, reports later suggested the date was moved because of both security and logistical concerns surrounding a large-scale sporting event on Independence Day itself, with Trump personally pushing for the White House to host the UFC card.

UFC Freedom 250 is expected to become one of the biggest events in company history

The event is already shaping up to be unlike any previous UFC show. Rather than using a traditional arena setup, the promotion plans to stage the fights entirely outdoors on the White House lawn, with reports suggesting around 4,300 seats will be installed directly on the South Lawn while approximately 85,000 additional tickets could reportedly be made available for fans at nearby Ellipse Park. White has also confirmed that the event will feature a reduced seven-fight card rather than the usual 12 or 13 bouts commonly seen at numbered UFC pay-per-views. Tickets are expected to be distributed primarily to members of the military as part of the broader patriotic celebrations surrounding the anniversary of American independence.

The card itself is also expected to feature several major stars from across the UFC roster. According to reports, Justin Gaethje is currently expected to challenge Ilia Topuria in the main event, while former light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira is reportedly preparing to move up to heavyweight to face Ciryl Gane for an interim heavyweight title in the absence of Tom Aspinall. Other American stars including Sean O’Malley and Bo Nickal are also expected to feature on the card. Also read: UFC sells $1.5 million White House tickets for ‘high rollers’ with access to McGregor’s 329 comeback fight

Dana White says insects around the Rose Garden immediately alarmed UFC production staff

Despite the excitement surrounding the event, White admitted the outdoor environment has created several problems the UFC normally does not face during indoor arena shows. Speaking during an appearance on Boardroom with Rich Kleiman, White explained that concerns over insects became immediately obvious after Trump invited him to a dinner at the Rose Garden. “President Trump just opened the Rose Garden two nights ago and he invited me to dinner there,” White said. “The amount of gnats that were flying around… I’m like, ‘Holy sh*t.’” White admitted the issue became serious enough that he contacted UFC production staff immediately after leaving Washington. “As soon as I got on the plane, I called my head of production and said, ‘Yeah, let me tell you about the gnat situation tonight.’” The UFC president explained that the massive lighting rigs required for an outdoor pay-per-view production could attract even more insects during the fights themselves. “So when you’re a fighter, think about that lighting grid, the amount of power in the lights… moths, gnats, and God knows what else,” White explained. “These are all the little details that we have to think about. That’s why I don’t like fighting outside. Ever.”

UFC are already discussing emergency solutions to the insect problem

White also admitted the insects could become a genuine competitive issue for fighters inside the octagon, particularly during high-pressure exchanges where even a brief distraction can completely alter a fight. “In your mouth, in your nose while you’re trying to fight,” White said while discussing the situation. He later revealed the promotion has already started considering possible solutions, including large fans positioned around the cage area to disrupt the insects’ flight paths. “I was telling Craig, my head of production, maybe we put fans in, because gnats have a bad time in the wind,” White explained. The unusual discussion even prompted comparisons to one of baseball’s most infamous insect-related moments.During the conversation, Kleiman referenced the New York Yankees’ infamous 2007 playoff defeat against the Cleveland Indians, when pitcher Joba Chamberlain struggled badly after being swarmed by gnats during a crucial eighth inning and eventually dropped a catch that helped Cleveland secure the win. That game became one of the most famous examples in American sport of insects directly affecting player performance during competition.

White House event continues creating unprecedented logistical concerns for UFC

The insect issue is only the latest complication surrounding what is already one of the most ambitious events the UFC has ever attempted to stage. Security concerns, weather risks, outdoor broadcasting challenges and the construction of temporary seating structures around the White House grounds have already forced UFC production teams to rethink several standard event procedures. Even so, UFC Freedom 250 is still expected to become one of the most watched and heavily discussed events in combat sports history if the promotion successfully delivers the White House spectacle being planned.
