Lucy Kennedy has shared how she marked her 50th birthday — and it was far from a big, glitzy celebration but the presenter revealed it couldn’t have been more perfect for her
Lucy Kennedy revealed she marked her milestone 50th birthday recently in her typically down-to-earth fashion — and, true to form, it sounded like an absolute blast.
The presenter, who recently celebrated the big birthday, revealed she kept things low-key, opting for a relaxed getaway with her best friends rather than any glamorous party or fuss.
“I turned 50 last week and I could not give a damn,” Lucy told RSVP Live.
Instead of a big celebration, Lucy headed to Waterford with her five closest friends, where they rented a house, ordered a takeaway and stayed in — exactly how she wanted it.
“It’s meant to be a big one but I just didn’t want any big deal. We got a takeaway and stayed in because they knew that’s what I’d rather do. I’m not a glamorous type of person,” she said.
That’s not to say it wasn’t eventful, though.
“We had so much fun. We started drinking at lunchtime, so we peaked at about five, because we can’t do it anymore,” she laughed.
In fact, Lucy admitted the group were “flossing and twerking on the Waterford ferry” with gusto— proof that, in her own words, they’re “still 19 in our heads.
Even at work, she made her feelings clear about any birthday attention.
“I warned Colm not to dare get a big cake or make a deal of it or I’d be so cross with him. I hate anything like that,” she said.
While Lucy is known for throwing herself into unusual situations on screen — often opening up her life to viewers — she admits personal attention like birthday celebrations is a different story.
“I think I am like a therapist’s dream because I live with strangers with a camera crew, get into my pyjamas, take off all my makeup, and I am as comfortable as can be — and yet I would hate it if someone approached me with a birthday cake.”
Despite hitting the milestone, Lucy says turning 50 hasn’t phased her in the slightest, admitting that turning 40 gave her more of a pause.
“I actually think it’s funny because I’m still very immature,” she said.
“I think at 50 you’re settled, you’re wise, you know what you’re doing, you drink posh wine — and that’s just everything that I’m not. I feel like I almost need to check my passport. Turning 40 felt different and weirder, but 50 I don’t give a monkeys. 50 is the new 40.”
“I look around at other people who I really admire, like Miriam O’Callaghan, Davina McCall, and I can see that age doesn’t matter”, she added. “It’s literally just a number. And it’s not that I don’t want anyone to know I’m 50. I mean, I tell everybody everything, but I just don’t really care to celebrate about me. I’m more excited about getting my dad turning 90 this week.
The Mini Breakers by Lucy Kennedy published by Bonnier Books UK is available in book stores from 7th of May
