Pakistan hopes to host next round of US-Iran talks soon: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday that Pakistan hopes to host the next round of talks between the United States and Iran “very soon,” as diplomatic efforts intensify toward a possible agreement aimed at easing regional tensions.

In a post on X, the prime minister said Pakistan would continue its peace efforts “with utmost sincerity” and expressed hope that Islamabad would soon host another round of negotiations.

The development came after US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Saturday with leaders from several countries to discuss efforts to finalize a deal with Iran.

According to Trump, the participants included leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain and Pakistan.

“An agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other countries,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that final details were still under discussion and would be announced shortly.

Pakistan was represented in the call by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff. Prime Minister Shehbaz later described Trump’s efforts for peace as “extraordinary” and termed the discussion “very useful and productive.”

Pakistan has stepped up its diplomatic engagement in recent weeks and is being viewed as an important mediator in the ongoing efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Government sources said Pakistan helped facilitate a draft framework intended to end the US-Iran standoff and could host what are being referred to as the “Islamabad Talks.”

The negotiations follow a fragile ceasefire that came into effect on April 8 after months of heightened tensions in the region that disrupted maritime trade routes and unsettled global energy markets.

Iran also signaled progress in the negotiations, with Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei saying Tehran was in the “final stage” of preparing a framework with Washington.

Trump also indicated that the proposed agreement would include measures related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route.
