The district police have taken major action against the illegal opium cultivation in the remote Mori area of Uttarkashi district. As per police sources, a joint team of the police and Revenue department raided the village called Painsar and destroyed the opium/poppy crop illegally grown on land of approximately 75 square meters. During this operation, samples of poppy stalks and plants were also collected and preserved for further investigation. Taking strict legal action against 31 landowners, two separate cases have been registered at Mori police station under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act.
This joint operation was carried out under the supervision of the deputy superintendent of police, Barkot, Chanchal Sharma and led by the tehsildar, Mori, Sardar Singh Chauhan and police station in-charge, Mori, Deepak Rawat.
Police said that this stern action has sent a clear message that illegal poppy cultivation would not be tolerated in the district under any circumstances. “We are monitoring things and this campaign will continue until this illegal narcotic cultivation is stamped out,” said a senior district police officer
