In a recent discussion, as reported by GamesRadar, Slater explained that the team always intended to resurrect a major character in Mortal Kombat 3. The goal was to keep the storyline open for future sequels and maintain suspense among viewers. The update has further created buzz among the fans of the game on various platforms like X, where discussions are taking place. With the popularity of Mortal Kombat 2 already, the plans for a sequel are becoming more and more apparent, and the longtime fans of the game series finally have a big storyline to look forward to on the big screen.

The character who is confirmed to return is Liu Kang, as confirmed by the reports made by Variety after interviewing Slater. The writers always intended to bring the character back in Mortal Kombat 3, even after the dramatic events that unfolded in Mortal Kombat 2. The fans of the video game series already know Liu Kang eventually transforms into the powerful “Fire God” version of himself. Slater specifically confirmed Liu Kang’s story “is far from over” and that the team had modified the character’s fate to make audiences question what really happened, helping to establish a larger storyline for Mortal Kombat 3.

“We always had planned to kill him in this movie,” Slater admitted. “We always knew that we would be bringing Liu Kang back in some regard in the third movie.” “We did wind up altering his death a little bit to make it more of a choice,” Slater revealed. “So we’re not sure if he actually died or if he ascended to some other plane? What actually happened to him at that moment is absolutely a mystery that’s going to be explored in Mortal Kombat 3.”

“My pitch in the round table was you need two shocking deaths,” Slater told Variety. The first happens early on in the movie and sees Cole Young brutally dispatched by Shao Kahn. Liu Kang is another important character that Kahn eliminates. But his fate remains unresolved as he perishes in flames. That is how Liu Kang would re-emerge as the “Fire God” in Mortal Kombat 3. The fans of the game series on various platforms debated how the character’s future role could shape the franchise moving forward.

”We didn’t expect how much even the casual audience would fall in love with Liu Kang. We always knew that we would be bringing Liu Kang back in some regard in the third movie. But we did wind up altering his death a little bit to make it more of a choice. So we’re not sure if he actually died or diife ascend to some other plane? What actually happened to hit him in that moment is absolutely a mystery that’s going to be explored in “Mortal Kombat III.” This was said by Jeremy Slater in an interview with Variety.

Those who have watched Mortal Kombat II are aware that during a battle against Shao Kahn, Liu Kang willingly spirits himself away, creating a mystery that could be explored further in a potential sequel. Writer Jeremy Slater had previously brought back an intriguing character, Kano, after he died in the first movie. So, it will be interesting to see how the next potential film explores Liu Kang’s death and possible return. The writer also opened up about killing off Cole Young early in Mortal Kombat II.

According to Slater, longtime fans wanted the movies to focus more heavily on classic game characters instead of original additions. He compared the situation to adding Bob into an Avengers movie beside icons like Iron Man and Captain America.  Still, he teased that actor Lewis Tan could return because “death is never permanent in the Mortal Kombat universe.” The original Mortal Kombat game also heavily relied on resurrection themes, particularly through Sindel’s return and Shao Kahn’s invasion of Earthrealm.
