The State Transport department has suspended Transport sub inspector Shashikant Tengowal from Dehradun following allegations of illegal extortion that surfaced in a viral video on social media. In the video, Tengowal was seen locked inside a shop while in uniform. The shop owner has accused him of illegal extortion, which has tarnished the image of the department. This behavior violates the provisions of the Uttarakhand Government servants Conduct Rules, 2002, officials said.
The department took cognisance of the viral video to maintain its reputation and uphold its zero-tolerance policy against corruption. According to department officials, the allegations against Tengowal are serious and, if proven, could result in substantial penalties. In accordance with Rule 4(1) of the Discipline and Appeal Rules, Tengowal has been suspended with immediate effect. During the period of suspension, he has been attached to the Transport Commissioner’s headquarters.
The officials also informed that a charge sheet is being prepared in relation to the allegations against Tengowal and a departmental inquiry is being recommended. If found guilty, appropriate punitive action will be taken according to the rules. Through this action, the Transport department aims to send a strong message to all the personnel that indiscipline, corruption or misuse of power will not be tolerated, the officials said.
