At least nine people were killed, and more than two dozen others were injured when a bomb attached to a rickshaw exploded in a busy bazaar area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Local police officials say the explosion occurred in the Lakki Marwat district near Peshawar.
Authorities said two traffic police officers and one woman were among those killed in the attack. The intensity of the blast also caused damage to several nearby shops, and many of the injured were said to be passersby present in the market area at the time of the explosion.
Apparently, the target of the bombing was traffic police personnel, said local police chief Azmat Ullah. Security personnel arrived quickly on the scene, and emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Pakistan intensifies investigation and security response
No group initially claimed responsibility for the blast. Suspicion initially fell on Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, but the group denied any involvement in an official statement.
The incident comes days after another major attack in the nearby Bannu district, where police officers were killed in a suicide bombing and armed assault on a security post.
Shehbaz Sharif condemned the Lakki Marwat attack in the strongest terms and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Investigations are being sped up to identify those responsible and strengthen security arrangements in sensitive districts, authorities said.
Pakistan’s government and security institutions have reaffirmed their commitment to keeping peace, stability and public safety in the wake of recent security challenges. The authorities have also asked the people living in the affected areas to be vigilant and cooperate with the local police forces in the ongoing security operations.
