Vet explains what it means when your dog licks your face, hands or feet

From nose nudges to tail wags, a vet explains what your dog’s licking and other behaviours really mean and how you can figure out what they’re trying to tell you

While some may consider it endearing or mildly annoying, an expert has revealed that a dog licking you carries real meaning. Vet Dr Julian Norton, speaking on behalf of Pure Pet Food, explains: “People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nuzzle with their noses.

“Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they’re trying to get attention by nuzzling you.” These gestures are far from random — they represent your dog’s way of forging a connection with you.

Dr Norton adds: “It’s quite endearing. I think it’s a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They’re just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention.”

According to the vet, licking often serves as an indication of bonding or an emotional check-in.

“Whether it’s a tender lick on the hand or an enthusiastic one on the face, your dog could be attempting to gauge your mood. It’s their way of expressing ‘I care'”, reports the Mirror.

That said, licking is just one of many ways dogs communicate and express themselves to their owners.

Tail wagging is another behaviour that is commonly misunderstood.

While many assume a wagging tail signals a happy dog, the reality is rather more complex. The height, speed and rigidity of the wag can convey anything from sheer joy to unease.

A high, relaxed wag typically suggests excitement, while a low, sluggish wag may point to anxiety or apprehension. Most remarkably, dogs may genuinely “smile” when experiencing contentment or a playful mood. While not identical to a human expression, certain canines retract their lips in a fashion that bears a striking resemblance to one.

When accompanied by a relaxed posture and wagging tail, this gesture clearly indicates that your furry companion is feeling cheerful.

These nuanced signals – from licking to tail movements to grins – all contribute to deepening the relationship between you and your pet.

Understanding them can result in a significantly stronger connection, and ultimately, a more content and self-assured dog.
