RBI Bank Customer Rights: Most of us have at some point been victims of the bank’s “lunch break,” which seems to never end. You arrive at the counter, and the employee inside, without even listening to you, says, “It’s lunchtime, come back in an hour,” or “The server is down, check tomorrow.”
Often, we wait silently or leave because we’re unaware of our rights. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules state that banks are for your convenience, you’re not at the bank’s mercy. Let’s explore how you can teach them a lesson the next time someone harasses you at the bank.
The Truth About Lunch Time
According to RBI regulations, banks do not have an official lunch break for customers during which business is completely suspended. Bank employees can take turns going for lunch, but they must ensure that a counter is always open. If an employee completely stops work and makes you wait, this is a clear violation of the rules.
Question the Bank Manager
If an employee is not listening to you, instead of wandering around, go directly to the bank manager’s cabin. Every bank has a complaint register. You can file a written complaint there. In most cases, the manager’s intervention will get your work done in no time.
Don’t give up even if the manager refuses. Every bank has a toll-free helpline number and an online complaint portal. You can find the nodal officer’s number on the bank’s website and call or email them. Banks take these complaints very seriously, as their records go directly to the head office.
File a Complaint with the Banking Ombudsman
If your complaint remains unresolved within 30 days of filing a complaint with the bank, you can approach the Banking Ombudsman of the RBI. This is the most effective method. You can file a complaint with the Ombudsman through various means.
Online Complaint: Visit and click on ‘File a Complaint’.
Email: Write your complaint and send it to CRPC@rbi.org.in.
Helpline Number: You can also lodge your complaint by dialing 14448 directly.
