WFH Is Back: Addressing a rally organized by the Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday (May 10), Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested measures such as judicious use of petrol and diesel, use of metro rail services in cities, car pooling, maximum use of electric vehicles, use of rail services for sending parcels, and working from home to save foreign exchange.
He said that the Iran-US war has led to a significant increase in the prices of petrol and fertilizers. PM Modi said that when there is pressure on supply, difficulties increase despite various measures taken by the government to deal with the crisis. Addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad, the PM said, “That is why, during a global crisis, we have to take resolutions keeping the country first.”
Referring to the methods adopted during the COVID-19 period, he said, “We have developed working from home, digital meetings, video conferences and many other methods during the Corona period. We have become accustomed to these. The need of the hour is to restart these methods.”
Emphasizing the need to conserve foreign currency due to the crisis, PM Modi appealed for postponing gold purchases and foreign travel for a year. He said, “We must save foreign currency at all costs.”
He also called for reducing edible oil consumption, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, and promoting natural farming and indigenous products to save foreign exchange and make the country self-reliant. He emphasized the increased use of public transportation such as metros, buses, and trains, and also encouraged carpooling for personal travel.
Will ‘Work From Home’ Return?
Working from home already existed in sectors like IT and consulting. However, it became commonplace during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. This happened when the Indian government imposed restrictions on travel outside and encouraged social distancing in response to the rising number of coronavirus cases. During his address in March 2020, PM Modi emphasized the idea of working from home.
He said, “Try to do your work, whether it’s business or employment, from home as much as possible. While it’s important for those in government services, healthcare, public representatives, and media personnel to remain active, everyone else should isolate themselves from the rest of society.”
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the work-from-home culture in many Indian companies shifted to hybrid work. Even after the lockdown ended, many companies maintained flexible work models, as both employees and employers had become accustomed to working remotely during the peak years of the pandemic.
In 2022, PM Modi stated that flexible workspaces, a work-from-home environment, and flexible working hours were the future. However, most companies began calling employees back to the office, citing productivity and team building challenges. The possible return of the ‘work-from-home’ culture will depend on the future of the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
This war is having the greatest impact on the kitchen, as India is one of the largest importers of LNG. The price of commercial cylinders has already risen by more than ₹1,000. Cooking oil has also become more expensive. International travel has already become more expensive. If this conflict resumes, the prices of everyday items like electronics, clothing, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and packaged food are also likely to rise.
