A gathering was held to pay tribute and discuss the role of media persons in the Uttarakhand statehood movement here on Sunday. At the event jointly organised by Shaheedo Ko Naman Samiti and Shri Durga Social Welfare Society, paying tributes to those who died in the statehood movement, position holder Ashok Verma said that the role of journalists and photographers had also played an important role in the movement. Former Information commissioner Yogesh Bhatt said that journalists and statehood activists had played a major role in the movement. The movement succeeded due to those who made sacrifices for the creation of Uttarakhand State. He said that the movement should be included in education in the State. Rajya Andolankari Samman Parishad vice chairman Subhash Barthwal assured that issues of the activists will be taken up seriously with the government. Statehood activist Jagmohan Negi said that it is unfortunate that the journalists who had contributed to the movement are being ignored by the government. Senior journalist Jeetendra Anthwal said that journalists had taken risks while reporting during the movement, adding that the government has remained apathetic towards them. Another senior journalist Shoorveer Bhandari said that neither of the national parties have acted appreciably when it comes to the identification of statehood activists, which is unfortunate.
