KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday issued a heatwave warning for large parts of Sindh, cautioning that a strengthening high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is likely to push temperatures to dangerous levels through May 31.
The warning comes as the country prepares to observe Eidul Azha from Wednesday, May 27, through Friday, May 29, with large numbers of people expected to be outdoors for prayers, sacrificial rituals and festivities during the peak of the heat.
According to the advisory, the most severe conditions are expected in the northern and central districts, where maximum temperatures could climb between 47 and 50 Celsius — four to six degrees above normal.
The districts under the highest risk include Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Larkana, Moen-Jo-Daro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur and Naushoreferoz.
A second band of intense heat is forecast for Tharparker, Badin, Hyderabad, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro and Sanghar, where maximum temperatures are expected to range between 44 and 47 Celsius, persisting until May 31.
In Karachi, conditions are forecast to remain hot and humid during the Eid holidays with maximum temperatures holding between 35 and 37 Celsius However, the humidity figures warrant particular concern for residents spending extended time outdoors during the Eid holidays. Morning humidity is expected to range between 75 and 85 percent across all three days, with evening levels remaining elevated at 60 to 70 percent.
