How to protect your home from pests as numbers will surge due to warm weather

There will be a significant increase in ants, wasps, flies, midges, mosquitoes, and cockroaches over the next few weeks, thanks to the recent spike in warm weather

Pest activity is expected to rise significantly due to the recent warm weather, which triggers a seasonal surge.

Homeowners are being warned to prepare themselves for an increase in ant, wasp, fly and biting insect activity over the coming weeks.

There is a whopping 556% increase in recorded pest activity during the warmer months compared to winter, according to Rentokil.

The sharpest increase was in recorded wasp activity, which rose by 925%. Ant activity increased by 565%, while biting insect activity, including midges and mosquitoes, rose by 112%, and fly-related activity also increased by 108% over the same period.

These common seasonal pests will likely become more active in the coming weeks as temperatures rise, with the largest increase in reported activity typically occurring during periods of sustained warm weather.

With more people spending time outdoors during the summer months and with windows and doors being opened more regularly, pest-related issues can escalate quickly.

Here are some precautions that homeowners should take:

  • Ants – Keep food sealed and clean up crumbs or sugary spills quickly. Seal cracks and entry points around windows and doors.
  • Wasps – Avoid leaving sugary drinks or food uncovered outdoors. Keep bins sealed and positioned away from seating areas.
  • Flies – Use fly screens where possible, keep kitchen surfaces clean and dispose of food waste regularly.
  • Midges & Mosquitoes – Use insect repellent, particularly in the evening. Remove standing water from plant pots, gutters and garden features.
  • Cockroaches – Store food in airtight containers and maintain a clean, dry kitchen environment.

Colm Moore, Regional Technical Manager for Rentokil, said: “While not surprising, the figures highlight the significant increase in crawling insect and flying pest activity that often occurs during the summer months as temperatures rise. Pests like wasps, flies, mosquitoes and ants become far more active during warmer weather, especially around homes, gardens and outdoor dining areas where food sources, standing water and outdoor activity create the ideal conditions for pests to thrive.

“While many of these pests are considered seasonal nuisances, infestations can develop quickly if preventative measures are not taken early. Simple steps such as keeping waste bins sealed, covering food outdoors, removing standing water and sealing entry points around the home can significantly reduce the likelihood of pest problems from developing.”
