ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 22nd May, 2026) Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, Nelson Azeem, on Friday informed the National Assembly that the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) was providing free blood transfusion services and medical care to registered thalassemia patients under specialised supervision.
Responding during Question Hour, he said thalassemia was a genetic disorder that required regular blood transfusions and continuous medical treatment.
He informed the House that registered patients at PIMS are treated in a separate ward, where dedicated beds and specialised medical staff have been arranged for their care.
He said all blood provided to patients was properly screened and tested to ensure safety and to prevent the risk of infectious diseases.
He added that strict procedures were in place to protect patient privacy and dignity during treatment.
The parliamentary secretary said awareness campaigns about thalassemia were also being run through doctors, health workers, television, and newspapers to educate the public about the disease and preventive measures.
Responding to a supplementary question, he confirmed that all registered thalassemia patients at PIMS received free blood transfusions.
He added that donated blood was thoroughly tested before transfusion to ensure safety for children and other patients.
He said that if any case of infection through transfusion is reported, it would be investigated.
He further stated that patients may bring blood donors from relatives or acquaintances if they choose, but the hospital continued to provide free blood and related medical services to all registered patients.
