Lucy Kennedy on the relationship lesson she hopes her children learn at home

Lucy Kennedy has opened up about family life with husband Richie and their three children, admitting that while life can sometimes feel chaotic, the couple are determined to make sure their children grow up surrounded by happiness at home.

From early mornings on the radio to weekends spent filming Living With Lucy, Lucy Kennedy is juggling a packed schedule alongside life at home with three children, Jack (16), Holly (14) and Jess (9) – and she admits that while she and husband Richie are very much winging it, she feels incredibly grateful for her marriage.

And after turning 50 last month, Lucy has revealed that more than ever she has learned to count her blessings, one of her biggest of which, is her family.

Admitting the idea of a happy marriage is something she always wished for but never took for granted, Lucy says that after 27 years, husband Richie is still her very best friend something she considers herself very lucky to be able to say.

“Life is better than I thought it would be,” Lucy told RSVP Magazine.

“I always wanted three babies. I’m still very in love, happily married to my husband. I’m so glad that happened.”

Lucy admitted that growing up with divorced parents left her carrying fears about history repeating itself, so having a happy family is something she has never taken for granted.

“My own parents separated, so there’s always the fear of history repeating itself,” she explained. “And with me it didn’t.”

Admitting Richie is almost her polar opposite, she revealed it him who keeps her grounded when work becomes too much.

“He doesn’t overshare with strangers like I would but he’s extremely funny in a very nice, calm, normal way. I would be running round the house, shouting and then laughing the next minute, he’s consistently calm and normal”, she laughs.

“He’s brilliant for me because he’ll always ground me, and remind me that he loves me and that I’m brilliant at my job but outside of that bubble, there is real life going on. He has no interest in showbiz life and is extremely grounded and confident in his own skin. He is the ying to my yang.”

“He gives great advice. He’s a business man. So he looks at things very differently to me, he’s way more mature, even though we’re the same age. And, he’s my best friend. I’m really lucky with him.”

And while the couple are a good team, Lucy admits that with so much happening in her career, life can be difficult to manage.

“There are days I definitely get overwhelmed,” she shared. “And I always want to be honest about that because I think in the world we live in, perception is just not the reality.”

Speaking about making things work at home with Ritchie as she juggles her work on radio, television and as an author, she explains, “We have a good partnership, but it’s really not easy. If I head off to do breakfast radio and then Jess is sick, the wheels fall off. So we really go day to day because every day is different.”

“My Living With Lucy days could be Friday to Sunday so that’s a big commitment for him because he always does the school drop off, but then if I’m gone, he’ll also have to be back for pick up, which is at 20 past two. So he’ll have to take that Friday off or work from home. Because we have three children, we both work and my work is kind of odd, strange hours, we’re a bit of a tag team, and we have been known to high five at the front door.”

However, this sense of being a team is to Lucy one of the most important things the couple are teaching their children, as she admits they are very conscious of what their children are seeing their parents model as they grow up.

“I even see with Jess if myself and Rich kiss, she is just so excited. I think children love seeing their parents happy, don’t they?”, she says.

“If myself and Rich have a disagreement, which of course we do, we’ve been together since we were 23, I think we’re very good at sorting it out quickly so our children don’t see it. So our children are just seeing happiness at home. And I think it’s good for them to see mum and dad both work. Both of their jobs are equally important and they help each other.”
