BRO Restores Connectivity in Bihar with 170-Foot Bailey Bridge Over Vikramshila Setu
IBG NEWS Desk | 21 May 2026
In a major relief for commuters and essential services in Bihar, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully launched a 170-foot Bailey Bridge over the damaged Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur. The emergency bridge installation comes after the collapse of a 34-metre navigational span on the crucial 4.88-km-long bridge over the River Ganga, which had completely disrupted traffic movement between North and South Bihar.
Vikramshila Setu serves as a vital transport corridor connecting NH-33 (Old NH-80) with NH-31 and is considered a lifeline for Bhagalpur and adjoining districts. Following the structural failure, the Bihar Government sought urgent assistance from the Ministry of Defence to restore connectivity and ensure the uninterrupted movement of light vehicles and emergency services.
Acting swiftly, the Ministry of Defence assigned the restoration operation to the Border Roads Organisation. BRO’s Project Swastik construction team completed the launch of the 170-foot Bailey Bridge in record time as part of the emergency response effort.
Officials stated that two additional Bailey Bridges, requested by the Bihar Government, will also be installed shortly over other distressed spans of the Vikramshila Setu to further stabilise transport connectivity in the region.
Additional Director General Border Roads (East), Shri Jitendra Prasad, VSM, visited the bridge site on 20 May 2026 to review the progress of the operation. During the inspection, he expressed satisfaction with the rapid pace of construction and assured the Bihar administration that the remaining bridge works would be completed expeditiously.
Prior to the site inspection, Shri Jitendra Prasad also held discussions in Patna with Road Construction Department Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal. The meeting was attended by BRPNNL Managing Director Shri Jitendra Kumar and BRO Superintending Engineer Shri Bipin Kumar Chand.
The Bihar administration has appreciated BRO’s timely intervention and rapid execution of the emergency infrastructure project. Authorities believe the restored connectivity will significantly reduce transportation hardships, support uninterrupted supply of essential services, and provide much-needed relief to residents of the affected areas.
The successful launch once again underlines BRO’s capability to respond efficiently during infrastructure emergencies and reinforces its critical role in national development and strategic connectivity.
