Spring is a critical time for organic lawn care, and gardeners have a limited window to encourage thicker, greener grass growth with Epsom salt
Spring is a pivotal season for lawn care, as grass is still recovering from the harshness of winter and has only a narrow window to flourish before rising temperatures begin to parch it. Gardeners have just a matter of weeks to encourage denser grass growth, enabling roots to burrow deeper into the soil, retaining greater moisture and bolstering drought resistance throughout the summer months.
Experts advise steering clear of synthetic fertilisers, as these can be detrimental to wildlife and, due to their fast-release nutrients, can leave grass dependent on regular feeding, potentially weakening the root system over time. Instead, Pleasant Green Grass, an organic landscaping firm, has revealed that the secret to thicker, greener, [and] stronger] is Epsom salt, an ingredient that a lot of people already have in their bathrooms. They explained: “If you care about your lawn and are an adept of organic lawn care and landscaping, then Epsom Salt is right for you.
“Make a mixture of the salt with water and spray your turf and lawn with the dilution once or twice a month.”
Why feed lawns Epsom salt in spring?
Widely known as a soothing bath soak for tired muscles and irritated skin, Epsom salt is also a naturally occurring compound rich in magnesium, which aids plants in absorbing additional nutrients and moisture. Magnesium plays a crucial role in helping plants produce chlorophyll, the green pigment essential for photosynthesis. Applied in spring, it gives lawns a much-needed boost during their most demanding period, resulting in noticeably denser grass and more robust root systems, reports the Express.
Epsom salt has cemented its place as a gardening staple, beloved for its ability to dramatically improve lawn colour and deliver strikingly greener grass with minimal effort.
The expert added: “The magnesium boost will help your grasses germinate faster and burst into sparkling green, robust, upright, thick and healthy turf blades.”
How to use Epsom salt on your lawn
Before treating your lawn with Epsom salt, it must be properly diluted, as organic materials are far more concentrated in their raw form, and applying it undiluted risks over-fertilising your grass.
Once a month is sufficient, as excessive use will flood the soil with too much magnesium and upset its nutrient balance.
Simply mix roughly one to two tablespoons with a litre of water, decant it into a sprayer, and spread it uniformly across the lawn to prevent uneven patches from forming.
The ideal moment to apply Epsom salt is following rainfall, which helps the nutrients seep into the soil rather than resting on the grass surface.
Keep up your regular lawn maintenance routine, including mowing, watering, and tackling moss in spring, and you should begin to see considerably thicker, lusher grass within just a week or two.
